Caramuru invested in a digital solution to learn about its supply chain and maintain its reputation shielding
A digital tool Safe digital tool was chosen to meet the requirements of CaramuruCaramuru, the main Brazilian group in the processing of soy, corn, sunflower and canola, whose objective is the sustainability of its commercial operations in the relationship with raw material suppliers.
São Paulo, October 2019 - The demand for sustainable products, with production that respects society and the environment, is growing worldwide, causing companies to rethink and cease purchases and financing from suppliers that are not in compliance with environmental and labor legislation.
But how to know who these socially and environmentally correct suppliers are, without access to true information?
About two years ago, Caramuru Alimentos, the main Brazilian group in soybean, corn, sunflower and canola processing, also had this doubt and presented Agrotools with a challenge: how to shield the reputation of a company, already committed to socio-environmental responsibility in its operations with its supply and financing chain? The need for shielding transcended the ethical issue and directly impacted commercial factors, such as meeting legal requirements - national and international - of stakeholders to remain in action both in the domestic and foreign markets.
To meet these expectations, Agrotools recommended Safe, a 100% national and proprietary digital solution developed based on territorial data. Through Safe it is possible to know the DNA of a given rural area: deforested fields, indigenous lands and embargoed areas, among other indicators, are detected, providing security about the true origin of the raw material.
"Until the use of Safe, Caramuru operated with tabular management of data, which could generate territorial inconsistencies," says Caramuru's Agriculture manager, André Luís. "Safe allowed the company to map and detect - perhaps for the first time - the entire portfolio of suppliers it has in the country."
According to the director of development, Davi Depiné, the transition to this geographical and digital management, thanks to the commitment and focus given, occurred in a short space of time. Today, Caramuru issues statements to check the status of its supply chain: whether they are in compliance with social and environmental aspects, cited in the Ibama embargo list, for example, or in the "dirty list" of the Labour Prosecutor's Office, which lists the activities of workers in situations analogous to slavery.
Thanks to the use of Safe, the company also has access to spatial criteria, such as Prodes, of Inpe - which carries out satellite monitoring of deforestation in the Legal Amazon and Cerrado - in addition to verifying environmental embargos, overlapping indigenous lands, conservation units and others.
Thus, by using Brazilian technology to monitor risks in its relationships with agribusiness suppliers in Brazil, Caramuru has achieved transparency and agility in its business transactions, providing support both to international investors and its shareholders. "The digital solution brought not only shielding, but also value perception for a product that, many times, is only referenced as commodities", says the Commercial and Marketing Director of Agrotools, Lucas Tuffi. "Thus, we can say that sustainability became a vector of efficiency and added value to Caramuru's business.
"In a second moment in the work with this client, we structured a customized protocol of socio-environmental risks, allowing Caramuru to meet internal and external criteria related to its business, such as Soy Moratorium and Grain Protocol, among others, so that it can - online and real time - monitor risks using the Agrotools platform.", emphasizes Tuffi.
